Claudio Ranieri has shut down rumours of a summer transfer for midfielder Danny Drinkwater to Manchester United.

It had been speculated that Jose Mourinho was looking to bring the 26-year-old back to Old Trafford for as much as £30 million in the January window as a screening partner for Paul Pogba.

However, the news came as a surprise for the Leicester City manager after Drinkwater signed a new contract with the club in August, although he was encouraged that his players are being linked to the Premier League’s biggest sides.

“I don’t know but this is big speculation,” said Ranieri before Wednesday’s EFL Cup fixture.

“I am very, very surprised because often it happens one month before the market opens – not now. He signed a new contract and everything is normal.

“But it is good. For us it is good, for him it is good. It is good when I have players who a lot of big teams want. That means we are working very well.

“Maybe the newspapers don’t have news and they write some news, that is my idea. It is okay, we don’t want to sell anybody. We want to keep our players.”
