Southampton striker Charlie Austin says he and his teammates need to push on following their first Premier League win of the season, a 1-0 victory against Swansea City.

Austin came off the bench to score his first Premier League goal since his debut against Manchester United in January, following on from his double in the Europa League midweek.

Despite his performance against Sparta Prague, the 27-year-old was forced to settle for a place on the bench before making an impact 10 minutes after being brought into the game.

“I’m delighted to score, but more importantly it’s about the team getting our first win,” he told reporters following the match.

“We got our first win on Thursday night, then we knew today was important, so I’m delighted we got the three points again.”

“To be fair, I should have got three. I should have scored two minutes before when I hit the bar, but one went in and I was delighted we scored.

“We can push on now. We’ve got a big game [against West Ham] next week.”

Despite his return to the bench despite his heroics in Europe, Austin was able to repay Claude Puel’s faith in the striker to turn the game.

“It’s all about the goals for a centre-forward, but, look, we’ve got plenty of goals in the team,” he added.

“Luckily enough it’s coming from me at the moment.

“The manager wants to rotate and that’s the plan. He’s the boss, he’s in charge and I’ve got to follow orders,” he added.
