After a summer of big-name signings it was young defender Joe Gomez who caught the eye in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Brisbane Roar.

The £3.5 million purchase from Charlton last month was arguably the best player on the pitch, constantly causing trouble down the right-hand side flank of the opposition.

For an 18-year-old his strength and technical ability was a sight to behold for the adoring Liverpool fans.

Presumably, one would have thought the player stood at 188cm would be due for a loan spell before truly making his mark on the first team, however, it appears manager Brendan Rodgers has seen more than enough to suggest Gomez can stake claim for a position in the XI this season.

“He’s staying. I’ve seen enough in this period,” Rodgers said.

“I always bring them in and over pre-season have a good idea of whether we’re going to keep them or not. Seeing him, in particular close at hand and his personality – he’ll be staying, he’ll get games.”

It’s a great vote of confidence from the Reds boss, who is delighted with the player’s versatility and ability to play in each post across defence.

“He’s only 18 years of age, but seeing him play at left-back for the first time, he looked an outstanding athlete and a really good footballer,” he said.

“I’ve seen him at centre-half and at right-back, but I wanted to see him at left-back – and I thought he was outstanding.”

“He’s got all the tools to play across the back four – he’s a big talent.”
