Matt Simon has re-signed with Sydney FC for another season, the club announced today.

The 30-year-old A-League veteran scored three goals in his first season for Sydney FC after joining from the Central Coast Mariners to link up with his former coach.

The striker, who spoke to club media, lauded the improvement over the course of the season and is tipping the team to challenge for trophies in the upcoming campaign.

“I think we showed in the AFC Champions League at the end of last season we are a club capable of matching it with the best. “I feel we are a squad who has a lot more to give in the A-League this season and with the new additions to the squad, we’ve got a great shot at silverware” Simon said.

Graham Arnold praised the target man, who he has enjoyed a long-standing working relationship with.

“Matt’s power, muscle and ability to cause headaches for defenders was hugely evident last season, especially in the AFC Champions League where his qualities helped us go further than this club has ever gone before in Asia.

“He can score goals and is a great leader to our younger players on and off the field,” Arnold said.

Sydney FC’s first competitive match is away to Wollongong Wolves in the FFA Cup on August 10.
