Melbourne City have moved to within one point of leaders Adelaide United, thanks to Nick Fitzgerald’s first goal for his new club.

Who were the worst performers on the night?

George Mells (Adelaide United)

After such a strong performance last weekend against Wellington Phoenix, the young midfielder was bought back down to earth as he seemed to struggle in such a big game. Mells often tried to do a little too much when he had the ball at his feet rather than just keeping it simple in the holding position in front of the back four. The 18-year-old almost produced a costly moment when he cheaply gave away the ball which almost allowed Bruno Fornaroli to pounce.

Jordan Elsey (Adelaide United)

The usually reliable defender seemed to be out of sorts playing in the left-back slot due to the absence of Tarek Elrich. Elsey found himself out of position for the goal as he allowed Nick Fitzgerald to cut inside, thus giving the midfielder a better view of the goal. The 22-year-old found himself in the referee’s notebook to top off a performance he will be wanting to move on from. The defender’s night was summed up when he produced a foul throw in the second half.

Michael Zullo (Melbourne City)

Despite starting the game brightly with some creative link-up play with Ben Garuccio, the full-back found himself have less of an impact as the game went on. Zullo was often sitting back and not making many overlapping runs as City found themselves with a number of counter-attacking opportunities. The balls he put into the box did not really test the United defence whenever he did manage to get forward.
