Bastian Schweinsteiger was seen in tears during a presentation to honour his illustrious international career, prior to Germany’s 2-0 win over Finland.

“It means so much that you’re here today. It has been an honour to play for you,” he told the crowd.

The midfielder concludes his international career with Germany after making his debut in June 2004 and was capped 121 times, scoring 24 goals.

Germany won the match against Finland 2-0, with Max Meyer and Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil getting on the scoresheet for Joachim Low’s side.

Schweinsteiger started the match, and was substituted in the 68th minute to a standing ovation from the crowd at Borrusia Park, Monchengladbach.

The 32-year-old has vowed to fight for his place within Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United midfield, after being left out of consecutive match-day squads in the opening weeks. A move to the MLS has been floated in the transfer window, but the player announced via social media that he still feels he can have an impact at the top level and will do his utmost to convince the manager of his quality.
