Overseas Aussies: Loan recalls and face-offs

For our last update of 2015, we look around Europe as some of the leagues prepare for a winter break.

Luke Brattan – Manchester City [loan recall]

His move to England is not going as smoothly as he would have hoped. With two weeks to go in his spell at Bolton, his parent club brought him back to Manchester without making a single appearance. It is highly unlikely that he will get an appearance at the Etihad outside of a reserves fixture so he will probably be sent elsewhere in January. Early rumours indicate Melbourne City as a potential destination and it would certainly give him some much needed game time. At this stage of his career, playing is above a destination if he wants to make a push for the Socceroos so wherever he goes, both he (and probably City) would like to see him play some football.

Tomi Juric – Roda JC [goal]

Remember when we were all bemoaning a shortage of goalscorers for the Socceroos? Well as it so happens, Juric has been on an impressive goalscoring run as of late. This weekend he scored once again for Roda, netting the opening goal in their 3-2 defeat at the hands of Willem II in a Dutch relegation scrap. It was his third goal in five days as he helps make amends for his November red card. Juric was not the only Aussie to get on the scoresheet – Rostyn Griffiths scored for Roda as well. Daniel De Silva got a run in the second half and the Aussies are establishing themselves as trusted members of the club setup. Results need to start coming quickly for Roda as they find themselves sitting just outside the relegation zone and in need of a few victories.

Tom Rogic – Celtic and Scott McDonald – Motherwell [played each other]

Two Aussies met in Scotland as one of the current golden boys faced off against the striker whose national team career never quite took off the way everyone had hoped. It looked like it was going the way of Rogic’s Celtic as he set up the opening goal by Nir Bitton just after half time. While McDonald did not get on the scoresheet himself, he had the last laugh as his side won 2-1 thanks to a double from Louis Moult soon after. A point clear of Aberdeen with a game in hand, this may not necessarily halt Celtic’s title chances.
