We return for the 2016 edition of Aussies Abroad ahead of  an interesting year for the Socceroos.

With no major tournaments to worry about, the team can focus on their World Cup Qualifiers with a handful of fixtures remaining before the next round starts. They open up 2016 with a home game against Tajikistan in Adelaide on March 24, before hosting Jordan five days later.

Rhys Williams – Charlton Athletic [LOAN MOVE]

It may come as a surprise to some, but much like Tom Rogic six months ago, we have recently discovered that the central-defender and midfielder is still alive and ready to play. To kick start his ailing career Rhys Williams has taken a loan move to Charlton Athletic, to get some much needed minutes under his feet.

Tommy Oar – Ipswich Town [GOAL]

Tommy Oar got an opportunity to play against Portsmouth in the FA Cup and made the most of it with a goal off a rebound to put his side up 1-0. That did not last for Ipswich though, as Portsmouth equalised minutes later with a final score of 2-2 leading to a replay later this month.

Brad Smith – Liverpool [GOAL]

The left-back got a start in a youthful Liverpool side which snatched a draw against Exeter City at Anfield. With the Reds struggling for numbers at the moment, Brad Smith might be in for a number of appearances. Whether or not he can hold down his starting spot is up to him, but a few more goals would not harm his chances.

Jason Davidson – Huddersfield Town [PLAYED]

2-2 was a popular score for Australians in the FA Cup as one of the other left-backs was involved in Huddersfield’s draw with QPR. Jason Davidson contributed an assist to help keep his side in the cup for the time being.
