Arsenal are looking to the Championship to help fill the void in defence following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.

HITC Sport is speculating the Gunners could make a move for Newcastle central-defender Chancel Mbemba.

“Mbemba is very much on Arsenal’s radar now, they have already done their homework and know the price – it would not be a complicated deal to get over the line,” the report reads.

Arsene Wenger was forced to field youngsters Calum Chambers and Rob Holding in his side’s first up loss to Liverpool before the experienced Laurent Koscielny returned at the weekend in the draw with Leicester.

Mbemba becomes the latest player linked with the Gunners after a deal for Shkodran Mustafi reportedly broke down, with Valencia not allowing the player to leave.

Aged only at 22, the centre-half was one of the few shining lights for Newcastle last season as they were unable to avoid relegation for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

The DR Congo international only joined the Magpies last summer for a fee of around £8 million, but £15 million would be required to get the deal over the line.
