West Ham United are close to securing the signature of Álvaro Arbeloa, according to sources inside the club.

The West Ham Insider states a “Spanish World Cup winning defender” will undergo a medical at the club with the aim of securing a signature before the 11pm transfer deadline.

If the signing goes through before tonight’s deadline, it will be the 12th signing by the Hammers during the current window.

The 33-year-old Arbeloa has been without a club since leaving Real Madrid at the end of the 2015-16 season, having played 153 matches for the side between 2009 and 2016.

Arbeloa was also a part of the 2010 World Cup-winning Spanish team, playing in one match against Honduras.

The full-back was rarely used last season for Real Madrid, playing only nine matches across all competitions.

The West Ham Insider also shut down speculation that Arsenal player Jack Wilshire will be making a move on loan to the side, stating that while the club believes Wilshire is a “fantastic player,” they are not looking to strengthen that position at the current time.
