Melbourne Victory’s unbeaten record in the 2016 Asian Champions League came to an end at the hands of Shanghai SIPG earlier tonight.

The visitors were competitive early in the contest and had opportunities to take the lead, but Shanghai would pounce upon a defensive lapse late in the first-half, scoring twice in three minutes through Yu Hai and Elkeson.

A Dario Conca penalty after the break extended the home side’s lead, with a late goal to Jesse Makarounas the only consolation for Kevin Muscat’s men.

Outside90’s Nathan John casts an eye over the individual Victory performances to see who stood out and who should have done more.

What history can the A-League learn from in pursuit of expansion? [Part 2]

Lawrence Thomas – 5: In stellar form coming into the match, the goalkeeper was let down by his defence for Shanghai’s first goal and caught flat-footed for the second. Was also below his best when distributing the ball.

Scott Galloway – 6: Cleared well under pressure early and adapted easily to Shanghai’s wingers switching sides. Worked hard to shut down the right but was absent in the crucial moments. Handled the ball in the area and Conca converted the spot-kick.

Nick Ansell – 6.5: Started well but was caught out as Yu Hai skipped past to tap in the home side’s opener. Suffered a knock to the head, which the referee paid little mind to, but his performance did not dip thereafter.

Matthieu Delpierre – 7.5: Typically a steadying influence in the defence. Left stranded by lazy fullbacks on more than one occasion, but recovered well.

Daniel Georgievski – 5: Bodied out Wu Lei early. Had space to run into on the left, but could not create any chances. Did not work hard enough to close down the space for Shanghai’s goals and was replaced by Jason Geria in the 69th.

Leigh Broxham – 6.5: Solid in the first-half, if a touch vulnerable in the air. Got forward for a couple of wayward shots. Taken off in the 67th minute for Jesse Makarounas with the Victory needing a creative spark.

Carl Valeri – 7: In another display of what the Victorians have missed throughout their A-League campaign, Valeri controlled the tempo through the middle and looked a natural fit alongside Oliver Bozanic and Leigh Broxham.

Oliver Bozanic – 6: Ran through Shanghai’s formation with ease early on, but finishing let him down. Was less prominent in the second-half.

Kosta Barbarouses – 6: Looked somewhat disinterested in the opening 45 minutes. Had a chance to give Victory the lead, but hit the crossbar. Never had the space that the opposition’s Wu Lei was afforded, yet the effort was lacking.

Besart Berisha – 7: Won out while double-teamed in the corner, with Barbarouses’ resultant shot denied by the woodwork. Forced to find the ball higher-up the pitch and showed some dash, but his passing was off target.

Archie Thompson – 4: Lacked presence on the left-wing and missed a clear-cut chance to pull one back for the Victory just before the half. Picked up a yellow card for removing his shirt, apparently while trying to adjust a GPS unit.

Substitutes

Jesse Makarounas – 7: Came on for Broxham and Got on the end of Geria’s cross to peg one back for Melbourne in the 81st.

Jason Geria – 7.5: Came on for Georgievski in the 69th. A couple of early mistakes gave way to a standout performance, however brief. Found space to assist Makarounas for Victory’s consolation goal.
