Midfielder Matias Fernandez has signed for AC Milan from Serie A rivals Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy, the club announced today.

Fernandez, 30, signed for Fiorentina in 2012 for €3.1 million, plus €1.5 million in bonuses, but has not been a part of Paulo Sousa’s plans for the upcoming season, having been an unused substitute in Fiorentina’s opening two matches against Juventus and Chievo.

The playmaker made 19 appearances for Fiorentina last season, and amassed one goal and seven assists for the Florence-based club.

Milan have also welcomed new signings Gianluca Ladadula, Gustavo Gomez, Mario Pasalic and Leonel Vangioni this window, as manager Vincenzo Montella looks to rebuild the squad following a poor period for the seven time European Champions.

Fiorentina and Milan are placed 10th and 11th in the Serie A respectively, with one win and loss apiece.

Milan’s next fixture is against Udinese at the San Siro after the international break, while Fiorentina travel to face early league leaders Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on September 11.
