Western Sydney Wanderers have moved to the top of the A-League table after a thrilling 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar at Pirtek Stadium on Saturday night.

The action started early in the clash, with a delightful ball from Dimitri Petratos finding Jamie Maclaren in the box, only for Andrew Redmayne to charge off his line and thwart the young striker. It led to a penalty shout from the visitors, which fell on deaf ears.

Despite being without their active support in the RBB, the home side had the ascendancy in the first half. Tony Popovic’s men were rewarded for their positive play in the 28th minute, after some beautiful ball control from Andreu triggered a promising counter attack. A composed cross from Romeo Castelen found Mark Bridge in the perfect position to tap the ball into the net.

Brisbane Roar pulled one back shortly after, with Maclaren latching onto a through ball from Thomas Broich. It was the striker’s third goal in two matches at the Wanderers’ home ground.

The second period saw an even contest, with Brisbane Roar perhaps posing more a threat in the front third. An overlapping run from Jack Hingert in the 60th minute almost resulted in a second for the Roar.

Despite dominance from Brisbane Roar towards the conclusion of the match, an in-form Mitch Nichols took advantage of space just outside the left of the box to score a stunning goal and put the Wanderers in the lead.
