A-League – Match Preview – Sydney FC vs Brisbane Roar

Just one point separates the two sides heading into a pivotal clash in the grand scope of the title race, so will the Sky Blues be able to jump the boys from Brisbane and keep the Wanderers within touching distance?

Graham Arnold’s men face a short turnaround after their last match which finished in a disappointing 1-0 loss at the hands of arch-rivals, Melbourne Victory. Sydney will be looking to bounce back and potentially into second spot on the ladder.

Meanwhile, Brisbane are a side in dire need of a change in form. After leading the competitions earlier rounds the Queensland side have failed to register a win in their last three matches and have conceded eight goals in their last two. John Aloisi will be hoping the return of Olyroo stars Brandon Borello and Jamie Maclaren help his side rediscover their attacking flair on Saturday evening.

Key battle – Matthew Jurman vs Jamie Maclaren

Jamie Maclaren has been nothing short of phenomenal in his first season with the Roar, proving many of his doubters from the far West wrong. In his absence, Brisbane have seemed devoid of all attacking creativity and penetration despite Henrique’s best efforts. His return will be welcomed by the Roar faithful.

Meanwhile, Matthew Jurman faces a stern test against the diminutive forward. For the better part of 12 months now, Jurman has been a trusted figure for Arnold but the former Roar-man cut a devastated figure on when he scored a decisive own goal against the Victory earlier in the week. The centreback faces not only a tough physical task with Maclaren on deck, but a mental battle that could define the rest of his season.

Team News & Expected Line Ups

Much of the same for Arnold this week with Alex Brosque the only absentee due to a lengthy hamstring injury. Alex Gersbach returns from Olyroos duty that could see a reshuffle at the back, with Grant potentially moving to right fullback for this encounter. Arnold also faces the same selection dilemma up front with Matt Simon and Shane Smeltz both playing below their full potential.

Meanwhile Aloisi welcomes back a trio of youngsters from Olyroos duty. James Donachie, Maclaren and Borello are all expected to feature in some way which could see a reshuffle in the front third.

Head-to-head

An even fixture, the two sides have met on 34 occassions. Brisbane have won 13 times, Sydney just 10 with 11 draws.

Previous Meeting

A borefest in their last encounter, both sides will be looking to improve performance levels this time out.

Prediction

It is likely to be a tight contest and despite their bad form, Brisbane will be buoyed by their returning youngsters. However, Sydney may be too organised for their opponents and with Ninkovic and Holosko now showing their best, they should prevail at home.
