Spanish veteran Xabi Alonso has revealed the worst moment of his 17-year football career was endured when playing for Real Madrid.

The Bayern Munich midfielder spent five seasons at the Bernabeu after a move from Liverpool in the summer of 2009.

The 34-year-old won the Champions League, La Liga and two Copa del Rey trophies during his time with the club, however despite playing for the most decorated club in world football he would rather forget one moment in particular as a Los Blancos player.

It all came about between Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, who will resume hostilities this weekend in an engrossing Manchester derby.

“I have memories of the first El Clasico between Pep and Jose, it was all about them. Because they are big personalities, and are so attractive to the fans, so there were big expectations,” he told Sky Sports.

“The first game was 5-0 to Barcelona. It was my worst experience on a football pitch. After 20 minutes I wanted the game to be over.

“It was a big setback for all of us, and Jose as well, but at that moment we were not at the highest level we could be. We kept going.

“It took about a year-and-a-half for Real to get to where we wanted, and from then we were level with Barca I think. We learned how to control Lionel Messi because he was the one making all the difference.”

Alonso is contracted with Bayern till the end of this season.
