What a question! This season is set to be the most unpredictable of them all. Last season was a real shock to the establishment and anyone making a football bet as Leicester ran away with the title having narrowly avoided relegation the season before and reigning champions Chelsea struggled to make the top 10.
This season will be even more unpredictable though as big clubs have strengthened, middling clubs have seen there’s a real path in the Champions League and bottom half clubs have been buoyed by the success of Leicester.
The fear factor has gone completely. The Premier League has always been a league where anyone could beat anyone but usually quality shone through in the end. Well now every team has quality in abundance and anyone really can beat anyone.
Runners-up Arsenal will be hoping to go one better but so far have only added one senior player to their squad. Granit Xhaka is a superb player and considering what transfer fees are like these days he’s an absolute steal at £29m add-ons. Xhaka alone won’t be enough to propel the Gunners to their first title since 2004 but if Wenger’s double La Liga raid for Real Madrid’s Jesé and Valencia’s Mustafi comes off then it’s worth a football bet that they claim their 14th English title.
Manchester City managed to fend off local rivals for fourth place last season to ensure new manager Pep Guardiola continues as a Champions League coach. They’ve already splashed the cash and are now looking to inject some youthful exuberance into their squad with a public courting of Everton’s John Stones and Colombian youngster Marlos Moreno. With limitless funds, a deep squad and the best manager in the game it’s no wonder they’re Coral’s bet of the day for who will win the title next season.
A few miles away, Guardiola’s old foe Jose Mourinho is the new manager at United and he seems keen to clear out any potential weak links starting with the Schweinsteiger. Mourinho is not adverse to playing ageing players as shown by the signing of Ibrahimovic but what he will do with the rather youthful squad Van Gaal left behind remains to be seen. There’s no doubt the Portuguese manager will be active in the transfer market up to the last day. Given his record in England you can’t rule them out as title contenders even if they are in transition.
Tottenham’s squad will be a year longer in the tooth and experience was the difference between them and arch rivals Arsenal last season. It was embarrassing for Spurs to finish behind their neighbours for the 21st consecutive season having looked the most likely to snatch the title from Leicester. Pochettino will have been working hard to ensure this doesn’t happen again and he has already made some shrewd moves. Tottenham are one of 10 clubs would could easily finish in the top four but they’re also one of 4-5 who are worth pinning your pounds to, to win the title. And of course there is Leicester. The Foxes have lost Kanté to Chelsea who too warrant a mention as potential title contenders with their addition of the French midfield general and youthful alternative to Costa in Batshuayi. Ranieri has managed to keep hold of top scorer Jamie Vardy who elected to stay in the midlands when Arsenal came calling. If they can keep hold of Mahrez as well they could put up a decent fight to retain their crown. Without Kanté to protect them from attack they may find their gung-ho counter-attacking approach less effective than last season.
