FC Barcelona defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in the second round of the Champions League group stages at Camp Nou on Tuesday evening.

To the surprise of many, Leverkusen held a winning position against the European champions for 60 minutes. But the lead changed in an instant when Barcelona scored two goals in the space of three minutes to get over the line.

The two goalkeepers played a huge role in the final scoreline.

Duel of the German shot stoppers

Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno was sensational between the posts, making nine major saves, keeping his side in a winning position for a long period. Leno’s first save was off an Ivan Rakitic header from close-range before denying a great left-footed attempt from young gun Sandro Ramirez. These were perhaps his best saves of the evening.

Barcelona’s man in goal was Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who made three saves which proved crucial in preventing his side from going 2-0 down. He saved Javier Hernandez’s attempt two minutes in and denied a fierce drive from Karim Bellarabi. Ter Stegen may not have been as busy as his compatriot Leno, but he still made an impact.
