Roma and Leverkusen put on one of the greatest Champions League Group Stage performances in history in a 4-4 draw overnight.

The German side took an early two-goal lead through Javier Hernandez, only for a Daniele De Rossi first-half double to level scores by the interval. After the restart, strikes from Miralem Pjanic and Iago Falque seemingly had the tie won for the Giallorossi, until late goals from Kevin Kampl and Admir Mehmedi saved a point for the hosts and broke Roma hearts.

Slow start again hurts Roma

After 30 minutes against BATE Borisov in their last Champions League game Roma found themselves 3-0 down. Just 15 minutes had gone in Leverkusen and again they were on the wrong end of a two-goal defecit. A quick fire double from former Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez had Rudi Garcia’s men on the ropes and Roma were all at sea at the back. Antonio Rudiger, making his return to his native Germany after a summer move from Stuttgart, looked particularly weak.

In all of their Champions league games this season, the Giallorossi have fallen behind and leave themselves far too much to do on a regular basis in Europe. They have been able to come back and claim a result each time, apart from the match with BATE where they were the width of a post from making it 3-3. It is a trend that Roma will surely need to buck if they are progress from Group E.
