Melbourne City have released footage of Tim Cahill’s first goal with the club, scored in last Sunday’s friendly against Wellington Phoenix in Townsville.

Cahill opened the scoring with a brilliant finish on the turn after 15 minutes on his first start for City after signing for the club under Football Federation Australia’s Guest Marquee Rule in August.

However, City proceeded to lose the match 4-1 after former Melbourne Victory midfielder Gui Finkler and Fijian hit man Roy Krishna scored doubles.

The Townsville friendly was Cahill’s second in sky blue and white having debuted off the bench against Brisbane Strikers in the FFA Cup at Perry Park.

The two sides will meet again in their A-League season opener at Westpac Stadium on 8 October.

Cahill is not expected to play in that match due to the next international break, where the Socceroos are due to face Saudi Arabia and Japan, meaning a maiden A-League appearance will likely come in the first Melbourne Derby of the season on 15 October.

Before then, City will host Western Sydney Wanderers in the last eight of the FFA Cup at AAMI Park on 21 September.
