Central Coast Mariners boss Tony Walmsley says he is aware of discussions between club owner Mike Charlesworth and the City Football Group.

The talks have emerged after former Mariners manager, now Fox Sports football pundit Phil Moss suggested young midfielder Anthony Caceres was set to sign with Premier League heavyweights Manchester City.

Walmsley says he has heard the news but is none the wiser about any formal agreement.

“I didn’t know there was any public information out there until I heard that this morning, so I do know that Mike Charlesworth has been in dialogue with the City Group,” Walmsley said.

“Caceres has got a transfer fee built into his contract, and if Mike and the head of the City Group have come to an agreement, I’ve yet to be told that’s the case.

“If it is (true), then what a great opportunity for Caceres to go and reach the potential that we all think he’s got.”

Despite the transfer talk, Walmsley did not rule out a return to the first team for Caceres after he was dropped for the Mariners’ New Year’s Day win over Wellington Phoenix and admitted he would be sad to see the 23-year-old depart.

“There’s always a chance (of a return). Whenever contracted players are putting in 100% here, they’ve brought into the division, then they’re always a chance.

“Of course (I’d be sad to see him go). I brought Cac to the club. He came as a youth player and I saw his potential there.”

Walmsley says Caceres has not been at his best in the Mariners’ recent turbulent period having given him the “keys to the kingdom”.

“He hasn’t been at his best of late, I don’t know what happens outside of these walls … we gave him the keys to the kingdom.

“He’s had a platform to grow as a person and as a player and he’s attracted the interest of some fairly serious suitors out there.

“The saddest thing was that he didn’t stay around to finish his contract and see out his potential here if he does go.

“I’m sure whatever deal is struck will be in the club’s best interests.”
