Melbourne Victory made their start to the 2015-16 W-league season with an unfortunate 2-1 loss to Perth Glory at ABD stadium this afternoon.

It was a fresh start to the season for the Victory with new signing Hayley Raso joining the attack in the starting XI.

However the home side were without the services of Gulcan Koca who has been sidelined due to injury.

Both teams appeared eager and hungry on the ball with the Glory’s combination of Samantha Kerr and Caitlin Foord up front proved to be a quick and cohesive partnership.

Yet it was the home squad that had all of the scoring opportunities early with Raso making productive and pulsating runs down the right flank.

Briar Palmer played a deeper role for the side yet came forward several times to provide further width and depth for the forward line.

Indeed it was the home side who drew first blood with Laura Spiranovic striking home from a brilliant build-up by Raso.

Yet the visitors weren’t deterred and continued to pressure the Victory’s back four. The equaliser came just minutes before the half time whistle with Foord finally making her presence felt.

Unfortunately for the hosts the momentum was with the Glory in the second term with Kerr failing to place her side in the lead several times.

While the victory appeared fatigued, the visitors continued to create waves of attacks as Kerr finally getting her name on the scoresheet with a simple tap in.

One to watch: Hayley Raso

It was somewhat of a positive surprise to all when 21-year-old Raso joined the Victory after her stint with the Brisbane Roar.

And of course in her true style, she made an impact straight away.

The now Matildas player showed a certain hunger for the ball only matched by her compatriot Kerr as she tore up the right wing with pace.

Her runs were quick and the final product was simply outstanding. However often there was no team mate waiting to receive the ball.

Raso’s concentration and pace makes her a joy to watch on the pitch and releases some of the pressure placed on Enza Barilla on the left flank.

One thing is for sure, Spiranovic can expect some decent service into the box this season.

Perth strike force

The girls from the west will always be contenders with a forward line that consists of two of Australia’s greatest talents.

While Kerr normally plays as a midfielder, her performance up front partnering up with Foord allows her to see more time on the ball. Yet it also provides the side with the element of surprise as is her unpredictability and bursts of energy.
