Mikel Arteta endured a horror 35-minute spell as his own goal helped West Brom to a 2-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday.

The Gunner’s trip to the Hawthorns was always going to be a tricky one and so it proved to be.

Midfielder Francis Coquelin could only last 14 minutes before being subbed off. The Frenchman came off second best following a tackle with Claudio Yacob.

He was replaced by Mikel Arteta who was about to endure an afternoon to forget.

However, it started brightly as the Gunner’s took the lead through an Olivier Giroud header in the 28th minute.

A mistimed challenge by Arteta moments later gave West Brom a free kick. The challenge proved costly as Chris Brunt’s delivery was turned home brilliantly by James Morrison to equalise for the Baggies.

Things were about to get even worse for Arteta five minutes later, when James McLean’s cross was turned into the net by the Arsenal midfielder.

Arteta could only last four minutes into the second half, before his miserable afternoon was brought to an end due to injury.

Alexis Sanchez was awarded a penalty late-on and Santi Carzola had the chance to salvage a point for the away side. However, the Spaniard slipped and kicked the ball onto his standing foot sending it into the stands.

The loss was yet another missed chance for Arsene Wenger’s men, who could have gone top of the Premier League following Manchester City’s loss to Liverpool on Saturday evening.

It was an afternoon to forget for the Spaniard who is far from the player he once was and for that, Mikel Arteta is the EPL villain of the week.
