The introduction of Olivier Giroud changed the complexion of the match

Often maligned and out of favour at the present time, Giroud has endured a difficult start to the new season. The constant rumblings of a potential new striker being signed throughout the summer heaped pressure on the Frenchman to hit the ground running. A slow start saw him eventually loose his place to Walcott who is now seen as the club’s number one striker.

With the game locked at 0-0 and signs of fatigue apparent, Giroud was introduced and immediately provided a more direct outlet, using his physical strength and height to hold the ball up, giving Bayern defender Jerome Boetang a thorough aerial examination, a vastly different threat to that of Walcott.

His presence allowed Arsenal to play off the target man after Walcott’s influence deteriorated as the second half progressed. Even though he did not know much about the goal, Giroud’s threat caused panic and chaos inside the penalty area, leading to the usually decisive Neuer making an uncharacteristic error.

The 29-year-old now has five goals in his last six matches for both club and country with four of them coming off the bench. His return to form is a testament to his strength in character and with both Walcott and now Giroud brimming with confidence, it gives Wenger comfort knowing he can rely on either of the two to find the net when called upon.
