Another late winner for Diego Costa stole the result for Chelsea, who escaped from Vicarage Road with a 2-1 win against Watford.

A dull, dire affair was brought to life late on as Antonio Conte’s side continued to show their newfound resilience, while the Hornets will be disappointed to have not gotten any reward from the match.

Outside90’s Christian Filippo takes a look at three players who stole the spotlight:

Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea)

Not often would the man of the match go to a player who only played 15 minutes, but the Spaniard has a very strong case.

A stagnant, predictable Chelsea midfield gained some much-needed class with Fabregas’ arrival, after he was again forced to start on the bench. The playmaker did everything he could to convince new manager Conte that he deserved a starting berth, turning the game in his side’s favour before cementing it with a glorious assist for Costa’s winning goal.

Etienne Capoue (Watford)

The Frenchman’s rare scoring run lasted another week, netting for the second consecutive match after converting just one goal from his first 57 Premier League outings.

It was not just the well-taken opener which marked Capoue’s performance though – rather, he was influential in midfield and gave the Blues no room to move for large portions of the contest. His four interceptions were the best of anyone on the field, with his late injury and substitution the only blight on a strong individual display.

Diego Costa (Chelsea)

The fiery hitman continues to create headlines for both the right and wrong reasons.

Costa polarises football fans almost like no other – evidenced by an apparent dive in the second-half, before he answered his critics with another late winner. The Spaniard gets under the skin of opposition defenders and looks to be forming quite a formidable partnership alongside fellow goal scorer Michy Batshuayi.

It seems he and another passionate customer in Antonio Conte complement each other very nicely.
