Sydney FC take on Adelaide United later tonight in a match that by kick-off could well prove a dead-rubber for the Sky Blues and their under-fire coach

Will Sydney’s season already be over?

After losing to Brisbane Roar in a thriller at Suncorp Stadium last weekend, Sydney FC have well and truly left their season in the hands of bitter rivals the Victory. Sitting six points in front of the Sydneysiders, all Melbourne need from the remaining two matches is a single point to put them beyond reach of Graham Arnold’s side. Meaning that with Kevin Muscat’s men taking on Wellington in New Zealand two hours prior to the Sky Blues’ kick-off, their season could well and truly be over before they even take to the field against Adelaide United. And given the Victory’s win over Western Sydney last weekend and the Phoenix’s poor season, it certainly seems a likely outcome.

Recent poor history against the Reds

Further trouble for the Sky Blues this weekend is their disappointing record against Adelaide United as of late. Not only have the Reds troubled Sydney in the A-League, having ended their unbeaten streak on the road earlier this season with a controversial finish, but they have also knocked Arnold’s team out of both installments of the FFA Cup. If there is still a slim chance at finals football come the opening whistle, Sydney will have to have done their homework and ensure perfect discipline if they’re to down United.

Adelaide’s impending meeting with Melbourne City

While a lot of attention will be on Sydney’s underwhelming season, Adelaide have a lot to play for when they run out at Allianz Stadium. A single point off the pace of Melbourne City and Brisbane Roar heading into the round, it is crucial for the Reds’ chances at not only the Premiership, but a week off and home finals football, that Adelaide leave Sydney with a result. Particularly given they face a newly invigorated City outfit in the final round of the regular season, which should both teams win this weekend will make for a potential winner takes all clash at AAMI Park.
