Can Sydney break their Adelaide hoodoo?

Heading to South Australia, Sydney are facing a possible third consecutive loss – their longest streak of that kind since November 2013. Although the Sky Blues have become renowned for their away form under Graham Arnold, this weekend’s task is one the team will likely be dreading. Against this weekend’s opponents, Sydney have won just one of their last eight A-League clashes, and met their demise in both instalments of the FFA Cup. Should the side find itself back in the winner’s circle, it will need to muster its mental strength and put on a much more rounded performance than that of the last fortnight.

David Carney back in sky blue

In what was some of the worst kept news this January transfer window as Sydney FC snagged the services of former Sky Blue, David Carney, from the Newcastle. Given Carney’s range of positions and impressive season for the Jets, there is no question his recruitment will bolster Sydney – but can he solve their goalscoring woes? Last weekend, Arnold’s men showed yet again their plethora of midfielders have more than enough quality to create chances, but they cannot put the ball in the back of the net as often as necessary. As the former Socceroo is, simply put, not a striker, and Shane Smeltz and Matt Simon still are not producing the goods, it looks like Sydney fans could still be in for a frustrating 90 minutes.

Adelaide’s superb attack

While much was made of United’s poor start to the season, less has been said of their incredible return to form and even more impressive rate of scoring. In the past four games, the Reds have put away an impressive 11 goals, and across the season so far they have pulled off 297 successful crosses into the box (the best in the league). Should the likes of Pablo Sanchez, Marcelo Carrusca and Isaias convert more chances (having wasted a combined 48 this season), Adelaide could well be unstoppable this weekend, and through into the finals.
