Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel is open to the Bundesliga title being decided by an end of season playoff series.

There are many competitions around the world which employ such a format, including MLS and the A-League, however, the larger European leagues traditionally utilise a ‘first past the post’ means of determining a season champion.

Recent talk in Germany, led by Bayer Leverkusen chief executive Wolfgang Holzhauser, has suggested that a more contemporary competition format should be explored.

Dortmund manager Tuchel is by no means against the idea.

“Why not? It would give the runners-up, third and fourth the chance to be champion,” he said.

“I do not think play-offs are far-fetched. I am basically very open to rule changes.”

Powerhouses Bayern Munich have convincingly won the Bundesliga title in previous years. Many believe the implementation of such measures would reignite the competitive side of the German league for all fans to enjoy.

This has been the case globally in the MLS, J-League and Liga MX.

Germany does currently use this format to some extent, with the relegation/promotion playoff seeing 16th place in the Bundesliga take on the third place team in Bundesliga 2 at the end of every season for a place in the top-flight.
