Monday’s announcement that Optus had secured the broadcast rights for the English Premier League from 2016-17 onward has sparked an outcry among Australian football fans. 

The $60 million+ deal will see an end to Fox Sport’s hold over the showing of the EPL, taking away one of the most valued jewels in Foxtel’s crown of sporting coverage.

Over the last 24 hours, the Facebook pages for both Foxtel and Fox Sports Australia have been flooded by messages from subscribers, looking for an explanation as to why the EPL rights were not seen as a higher priority and expressing their dissatisfaction with claims that many will not renew the service when what is arguably the world’s top football competition is taken to a different provider.

However, it looks as though the message has already begun to hit home with the subscription TV giants, who seemingly have until August of next year to work out a plan which will keep the Premier League on Fox Sports in some form or another:
