Sergio Aguero was the Sky Blues’ hero yet again, after netting his second hat-trick of the season in Manchester City’s 4-0 win over Boroussia Monchengladbach at the Etihad Stadium.

It took the Argentine than 10 minutes to break the deadlock, turning in Aleksandar Kolarov’s cross, before doubling the lead on the half hour mark from the penalty spot.

City were in cruise control  in the second half and the Argentine striker managed to round goalkeeper Yann Sommer to score into an open net to complete his hat-trick. Kelechi Iheanacho replaced Aguero for the final minutes and got himself on the scoresheet to make it 4-0 deep into extra time.

Despite attempting to alter their game plan in the first half itself, Monchengladbach failed to really test City and could not cope with Guardiola’s dynamic style of play.

Aguero’s back with a bang

The 28-year-old has been serving a three-match ban in the Premier League for violent conduct but was available for his sides’ European outing. Having already scored a hat-trick in qualification, Aguero continued his excellent form this season by adding yet another treble to his name.

Having missed out on the Manchester derby only a few days ago, Aguero showed no signs slowing down as he picked up where he left off. He will undoubtedly have a vital role to play if City are to come out of a difficult group.

However, concerns have been raised for the diminutive striker, having been brought off with a suspected injury, although it didn’t look too serious. With another couple of games of his ban yet to serve domestically, Aguero can be well rested before the Citizens next European tie away to Celtic.

A perfect start for Pep

City’s toughest test in the group is yet to come when they face off against Barcelona who showed no mercy in their opening fixture, beating Celtic 7-0. Pep Guardiola will know the importance of earning as many points as possible before visiting the Catalan giants.

The Sky Blues have faced tough test’s in the Champions League group stages in recent years but have still managed to reach the next phase in each f the last three seasons.

Their next fixture in the Champions League is away to Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic and City should be confident that they can get a positive result there before they visit Guardiola’s former team at the Camp Nou.

Monchengladbach face uphill battle

The Foals’ fans for feeling a little hard done by after being placed in one of the toughest groups in this season’s competition. After this drubbing at the hands of City, Gladbach progression to the group stage is an uphill task.

A disappointing trip to Manchester has already left them chasing Barcelona and City who are clear favourites to ease into the knockout stage. Andre Schubert will know the tough task ahead and will want to be much more cautious in their next game against Barcelona.

A Europa League spot look on the cards for Gladbach although the opportunity is there for a most unlikely upset or two.
