Outside90’s Fraser Stewart takes a look back at the major talking points to come from the latest round of Swiss Super Legue action.

Grasshopper Zurich are no flukes

Grasshopper Zurich proved that last week’s victory was not a fluke by beating BSC Young Boys 3-2 at the Letzigrund.

It only took until the 15th minute to break the deadlock, a counter-attack from the hosts leading to a Yoric Ravet stunner from outside the box that hit the bottom corner of the net.

The Young Boys defenders gave Ravet far too much space to run onto the ball, however, when they finally tried to make a challenge he played a sublime pass to Caio on the wing. The Brazilian’s shot was blocked into the path of Ravet for an easy finish.

After opening the scoring it kept going Zurich’s way, increasing their lead in the 40th minute from another counter where Shani Tarashaj connected with Mrko Basic before shooting with his deadly left-foot.

As the floodgates were opening, again Grasshopper were attacking when Ravet played a long ball to Caio who sealed the victory with a spectacular volley from outside of the box.

The visitors did not give up though and pulled one back on the 68th minute through a well conducted corner that found Milan Vilotic.

With the scoreline at 3-1, a Young Boys corner was poorly cleared straight to defender Florent Hadergjonaj. The 21-year-old then crossed it in to Yuya Kubo to send into the back of the net despite protests of offside from the hosts.

The game finished in a 3-2 win for Grasshopper Zurich, showing why they are genuine championship threats this season.

As for Young Boys, it is just a matter of getting the results to consistently turn their way.

Basel continue to flourish

Urs Fischer’s men demonstrated why they sit atop the Swiss Super league with an outstanding performance against FC Zurich.

It did not take long for Basel to take the lead, a corner in the fifth minute went straight across goal until Micheal Lnag reacted and headed past goalkeeper Johnny Leoni.

Before the break FC Zurich took their opportunity to level the scores, a free kick finding Ivan Kecojevic to send the ball over the line with a perfectly timed jump into the air.

In the 71st minute Basel retook the advantage through Shkelzen Gashi, who was taking on defenders single-handedly. When he was confronted he simply put the ball through his opponent’s legs before hitting the back of the net.

There was controversy in the closing stages when a penalty was given to Basel. The incident came from a corner, where Alain Nef dragged striker Marc Janko down inside the box and the referee was quick to point to the spot.

The former Sydney FC man stepped-up to convert, however, the goalkeeper will be disappointed after guessing the right direction.

Sion back with a superb win

Sion looked like they had put last week’s result behind them when they played FC Thun away from home.

This was evident in the way they played, seeming to move the ball with joy and fluency.

The opening goal came just before half-time when Sion hit the lead after a goal from Carlitos. The build up in itself was worthy of the reward, almost Barcelona-like as Moussa Konate played a great one-two with the winger.

With the momentum on their side the visitors added a second, this time Carlitos providing the assist for Konate, however, Thun had the chance to reduce the deficit in the 71st minute when Gonzalo Zarate’s shot went to straight to the goalkeeper from long range.

Sion is well and truly alive in the league if they continue playing this kind of football.

FC Vaduz move from the bottom

FC Vaduz have moved up to seventh on the league ladder after last Sunday’s win against St Gallen.

The action began form the fourth minute where a poorly constructed corner from Gallen resulted in a counter attack that found Moreno Costanzo, who was onside and only had the goalkeeper to beat, but inevitably the shot was weak and it went straight into hands of Thomas Alder

There was a nervous moment for Vaduz that came in the 40th minute as the visitors had a another corner that was a much more dangerous, picking out Roy Gelmi, who’s strike was comfortably blocked. Sandro Gotal got to the rebound, but again the defenders scrambled their lines to keep the ball out of the net.

On the 82nd minute Vaduz finally broke the deadlock when a cross came into the penalty box and it left Stjepan Kukuruzovic with a simple tap in.

They could have won by much more than a goal, but were let down but a lack of solid finishing. If Vaduz want to stay up, they will have to convert the chances that come their direction.

Missed chances costs Lugano while Luzern go back-to-back

Luzern were coming-off from a high last week after beating FC Zurich 5-2 and this time were facing a wounded Lugano who lost 3-1 to leaders Basel.

On the ninth minute Zdeněk Zeman’s squad had a golden chance to take the lead from a counter-attack, when Sandro Lombardi received the ball while running past two defenders, only for his shot to be hit straight at the goalkeeper.

They had another opportunity soon after, when a shot came from distance only be denied by a great save from David Zibung .

However, the momentum shifted towards Luzern and this time they had the best sight to find a breakthrough. Relaxed defending from a corner sent the ball straight to Jerome Thiesson, who ran down the wing and then crossed back into the box for Dario Lezcano, but this time his attempt came off the post.

On the 64th minute the deadlock was finally broken when Lezcano made a cross that ultimately hit the back of the net. The build-up to the play came from another corner, when he received a one-two pass then looked up to deliver the ball, but his un-intended shot was enough to seal the win.

It was a game where Lugano could just have easily won if it was not for the missed chances, while Luzern still need to tighten-up their defence if they want to be closer to Basel’s standards.

The win moves Luzern up to third on the league table.
