Sunderland have secured the signing of Tottenham central-defender Younes Kaboul for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £5 million.

The former France international has signed a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light and becomes manager Dick Advocaat’s fourth summer signing, following the acquisitions of Adam Matthews, Sebastian Coates and Jeremain Lens.

The 29-year-old Kaboul has been out of favour at White Hart Lane ever since Mauricio Pochettino was appointed manager at the start of last season and failed to make a senior Premier League appearance after Spurs’ 2-1 defeat to Stoke City in November.

Manager Dick Advocaat has moved swiftly to improve an area the Black Cats were consistently found wanting last season, with crucial lapses in concentration at the back contributing to a relegation battle which saw them avoid the dreaded drop by just three points.

Advocaat was delighted to secure the services of the former Tottenham captain and had this to say about his new signing – “he is a very experienced player, which is what we need. He has shown that in his time at Tottenham and he will be a very good addition to our squad.”
