South Melbourne for the A-League? Former President George Donikian says ‘show me the money!’

Is there a place for South Melbourne in the A-League?

Speaking on the Daily Football Show with Mark van Aken and the Herald Sun’s Matt Windley, former President George Donikian remains speculative the club can join the A-League until the financial means are on the table.

“South have been on the outside for a number of reasons. The principle one was that we were never really positioned financially to make a reasonable and fair go at getting an A-League license,” he said.

“Are they able to do it now? That remains to be seen. I want to see the colour of the money and the quality of the people.”

“There are a lot of sleeping South Melbourne fans too, let’s not forget that.”

After penning an article on the topic in yesterday’s Herald Sun, Matt Windley is buoyed by the idea of a new rivalry in the A-League, particularly between South Melbourne and Melbourne Victory.

He says their existing fan-base means they won’t be eating into the fan-bases of Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City, and that a 14,000 seater Lakeside Stadium (with the potential to expand to 20,000 should they be granted an A-League license), would be a perfect boutique setting for a new club.
