Everton manager Ronald Koeman has lauded his side’s mindset after recovering from 1-0 down to claim a 3-1 win against Middlesbrough at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Boro took the lead amid some controversy, with Alvaro Negredo appearing to foul Maarten Stekelenburg as  the goalkeeper spilled the ball into the net.

But the hosts rallied and were level within three minutes. Gareth Barry scored on his milestone 600th Premier League appearance before Seamus Coleman netted a brilliant solo strike.

Romelu Lukaku made sure the Blues went into the break with a handy buffer, putting the final touches on Yannick Bolasie’s cross.

Koeman refused to label the referee’s decision as a mistake, but was thrilled by his team’s response.

“The reaction after we went 1-0 down (was most pleasing),” Koeman said.

“Maybe we did it after a mistake of the referee, but after we went 1-0 down we showed really good football, more aggressive.

“I think Middlesbrough started better than Everton today, but that’s the great character of the players and the team, 1-0 down at home … 3-1 by half time.

“(It was) great football, it was really enjoyable how we played.”

Everton take on Norwich City on Tuesday in the League Cup before travelling to AFC Bournemouth next weekend.
