Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt believes Monaco’s equaliser shows just how brutal football can be, as his side conceded a last minute goal which earned the host a share of the points this morning.

The Germans looked set for maximum rewards thanks to a goal from striker Javier Hernandez, before Kamil Gilk broke Leverkusen hearts with a 94th minute equaliser.

“It’s a pity, we played very well, the lead was deserved and a win would have been deserved as well,” Schmidt told media following the Champions League match.

“However, football can be brutal sometimes and we have to accept that.”

On the other hand, Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim said his team well and truly deserved their share of the points.

“The game was balanced – I looked at the stats, all the important figures are balanced,” he told BeIn Sports.

“Taking a point having been behind is always a positive. The team reacted after the goal and the substitutes brought something.

“Glik’s goal is as important as the assist of [Guido] Carrillo, who won his duel. Glik is a player with a strong personality. He has a positive attitude and works well with the others.”
