After a virtuoso display in Saturday’s 2-1 derby win, Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne has spoken of his enjoyment working under Pep Guardiola.

Since arriving from Wolfsburg in 2015 for £58m, the Belgian scored 16 goals in his maiden campaign under Manuel Pellegrini, but looks to have reached another level under the former Barcelona boss.

“At the moment it is very positive, so we just have to try to keep it in this flow,” De Bruyne said.

“I think maybe for some guys it is a new beginning. Last year was very difficult with all the injuries and maybe personal… I don’t know what happened last year, it’s just a different season. It happens.”

Despite an interrupted pre-season with international commitments, the 25-year-old lauded his club’s preparation for the new campaign, which has seen City win all four Premier League matches.

“Everybody came back from the Euros and had some time to relax and just refocus. Sometimes it’s important to have enough rest to get back and want to play really well.”

The Belgian put in one of his best performances in recent memory against Manchester United, scoring the opening goal and possessing a significant goal-threat. He operated in tandem with David Silva as chief tormentors behind Kelechi Iheanacho: “I think in this system for me it is the best thing,” he said.

Manchester City face Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League on Wednesday, before hosting Bournemouth on Saturday.
