Wayne Rooney scored an opportunistic goal, setting a new Premier League record in the process, as United stole all three points from Liverpool in a lacklustre clash.

United looked to have rediscovered their attacking flair against Newcastle in their last outing but there was scant evidence of that revival on display. United were dreadful for almost all the game, the sole exception being goalkeeper David De Gea who was once again brilliant.

Liverpool will rightly consider themselves unlucky. They were the better team from the outset and deserved a result, if not all three points. Despite their dominance of proceedings and United’s sloppy play, Jurgen Klopp will be disappointed that his side failed to create many genuine goalscoring chances and their wastefulness with the ones they did create.

Their wasteful cost them dearly in the end, as Wayne Rooney was on hand to volley home from close range after Marouane Fellaini’s header bounced back of the crossbar. In many ways, it was the ultimate smash and grab effort from United.

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet – 5.5: Did not have a lot to do all afternoon. Could not have done much to stop Rooney’s goal.

Nathaniel Clyne – 6: Offered plenty of attacking intent with very little to do defensively for most of the afternoon.

Kolo Toure – 6: United seemed content to play to the veteran’s strengths for most of the afternoon by bombarding an isolated Rooney with long balls.

Mamadou Sakho – 6.5: Careless in possession early but settled into the game after that. Fairly assured for most of the afternoon.

Alberto Moreno – 6: The Spaniard was shown up by Juan Mata in last season’s fixture but was far more accomplished this year. United’s right barely offered a threat all afternoon.

Jordan Henderson – 6.5: The Englishman was a ball of energy for Liverpool in midfield and often outran United’s midfielders. Will be disappointed he did not do better with a couple of genuine scoring chances.

Lucas – 6.5: This scrappy and physical affair suited the Brazilian. His pinpoint passing nearly set up Lallana for an early Liverpool goal.

Emre Can – 6: Often wasteful in possession but also provided some real moments of spark and inspiration. An up and down performance but one that always felt as though it could have yielded a result for Liverpool.

Adam Lallana – 5.5: Presented with a glorious chance early in the game. Will be rueing his wastefulness. Subbed out for Jordon Ibe after 76 minutes.

James Milner – 6.5: An industrious performance from the Englishman who troubled United’s full-backs all afternoon.

Roberto Firmino – 5.5: The striker struggled to get much going all afternoon.

Substitutes

Jordon Ibe – 4.5: Subbed on just before the goal as Liverpool went for the win. Had little impact.

Christian Benteke – N/A: Late sub as Liverpool chased an equaliser.

Steven Caulker – N/A: On for too little time to rate.
