Newcastle Jets have officially appointed Mark Jones as their head coach until the end of the 2017-18 A-League season.

The club will be led by a homegrown duo on the sidelines, with Clayton Zane named as assistant coach earlier today.

Both men have years of experience with football in the Hunter region, having played for the Newcastle Breakers in the NSL during the 1990s and holding various coaching roles at the Jets previously.

“It’s a proud day for me to be appointed head coach of Newcastle Jets, my hometown Club,” said Jones in a statement issued to the media.

“It is no secret that this is a position that I have long coveted, and to realise my ambition of becoming a Head Coach in the city I love is a dream come true.”

“But now the hard work begins. The club has assembled a competitive and balanced squad brimming with local talent, A-League experience and international know-how for the Hyundai A-League 2016-17 season, and I am personally excited to work with each and every member of the squad.

The Jets begin their season at home against reigning A-League champions Adelaide United on October 9.
