The cliche ‘just another game’ has become part and parcel with football players all over the world when talking about derbies.

However, Western Sydney Wanderers’ skipper Nikolai Topor-Stanley hasn’t shied away from pumping up the Sydney Derby.

The 30-year-old has made no secret of his team’s desire to overturn a two-year long winless drought in the Derby, and is aware of the heightened importance of the match.

“It’s not a pretty record,” he said on the Daily Football Show.

“We know we have to keep the emotions in check as much as possible. It is a derby, it’s not just another game.”

Topor-Stanley said his side was leaving no stone unturned in their preparation for the match, with every small detail accounted for when dissecting the Sky Blues.

He also returned fire to Sydney FC CEO Tony Pignata who on Tuesday’s Daily Football Show, couldn’t bring himself to utter the words ‘Western Sydney Wanderers’.

“Maybe he feels a bit intimidated by us. I’m glad to be in that position,” Topor-Stanley said in response.
