Although Walker has played every minute of England’s campaign at the continental showcase so far, the statistics reveal that he may not be the best choice for the role. The Tottenham defender has distributed the ball with just 79% accuracy compared to the near perfect 95% of Clyne – who also made nine more successful passes during his time on the field so far.

The Liverpool stalwart is also created more than five chances more for teammates than Walker, while also leading in terms of interceptions and attempts on goal.

It remains to be seen though if these figures are enough to make up the mind of the quizzical Hodgson.
