Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes the Red Devils complicated their win over Northampton Town in the League Cup on Wednesday.

United eventually overcame the Cobblers 3-1 after Alex Revell levelled the ledger three minutes before half time.

Goals from Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford ensured United ended their three-game losing streak and secured a derby clash against Manchester City in the next round.

But veteran Carrick, who was named man of the match, admitted United made things difficult for themselves.

“I think we did in the end (have to work hard for that victory,” Carrick said in a post-match interview with Sky Sports.

“I think the way we started the game, we could have made things so much easier for ourselves going a goal up and having chances like we did.

“Just before half time, we took our foot of the gas and gave them a chance to get back in the game, so we were disappointed with that.

“But in the second half, we did the job and we finished the game off.”

United will be out to snap a winless run in the league of two matches when they welcome reigning champions Leicester City to Old Trafford on Saturday.
