Melbourne Victory has confirmed they will play Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid in Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Sunday, July 31.

Victory will take part in a scheduled match against Juventus in the International Champions Cup at the MCG on July 23.

Atletico Madrid will face Tottenham Hotspur in the ICC tournament and will now extend their pre-season tour of Australia with a match against the A-League club.

In a major coup for the A-League and regional Victoria the news was met with excitement by Melbourne Victory CEO Ian Robson.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to test ourselves against some of the best club sides in the world,” Robson said.

“We’re thrilled to play this game against Atletico Madrid in Geelong – a region we’ve had a close association with, particularly over the last few seasons.”

The CEO praised the Geelong community and urged the fans to relish the opportunity of watching some of the world’s best players live.

“The people of Geelong have been magnificent in their support of Victory,” he said.

“We encourage all of our fans to support us in our matches against Juventus and Atletico Madrid, in what is a rare opportunity to witness some of the world’s best players in Australia.”

Atletico Madrid are coming to Melbourne for the 2016 International Champions Cup Australia, presented by Audi.
