Melbourne City have backed up their 4-1 thumping of Western Sydney Wanderers in the FFA Cup, defeating Auckland City in a preseason friendly on Sunday morning.

New signings Nicolas Colazo and Tim Cahill were both on target as City claimed a 2-0 win over their visitors at their annual Family Day, held at Bundoora headquarters City Football Academy (CFA).

City have enjoyed mixed results throughout the preseason, winning friendlies against Northern Fury and now Auckland as well as cup success against Western Sydney, but were humbled convincingly by Newcastle Jets 4-0 and Wellington Phoenix 4-1.

A number of City’s new signings have hit the scoreboard in the past week, including Cahill, Colazo, Michael Jakobsen and Fernando Brandan, helping the club into the FFA Cup semi-finals for the second time in a row.

Including preseason friendlies, Cahill has now netted three goals for City.

City’s A-League opener is against Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium on 8 October.
