Roberto Martinez has received a staggering severance payment of more than £10m after being sacked by Everton in May.

Martinez had three years left on his contract at Goodison Park before being shown the door after a poor season finishing in 11th position on the Premier League table.

The 43-year-old, had originally demanded £12m from the Merseyside club, as a clause in his contract meant he was to have his contract paid out in full, but agreed to a reduction if the payment was made in one instalment.

The Spaniard, who previously managed at Swansea City and Wigan Athletic, both teams he played for during his career, was handed a five-year contract by Everton chairman Bill Kenwright in 2014, following a stellar first season where he guided The Toffees to a very respectable fifth place.

At the time described by Kenwright as the “best young manager in Europe”, Martinez was last month appointed as the manager of Belgium, taking over from Marc Wilmots after De Rode Duivels were knocked out of the European Championships by surprise package Wales in the quarter-finals.
