Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, after he separated from his agent.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for the French striker, with reports Jose Mourinho wants to replace Wayne Rooney with the 25-year-old.

“From now I’m going to operate without an agent,” Griezmann told French publication L’Equipe reported via the Manchester Evening News.

United’s pursuit of the forward could be made easier by the fact that Atletico manager Diego Simone has elected to shorten his deal to 2018 instead of 2020, with Griezmann holding him in high regard.

“Simeone is a very important person for me, and that is why I called him before renewing [contract],” Griezmann said earlier this month.

“He told me he was staying and that was sufficient for me. I’m happy in Spain and I have a lot of things to learn from him.”

If a deal is to be worked out next summer, United will be forced to work a way around the Spanish club’s transfer ban in 2017.
