Former German international Lukas Podolski has criticised Jose Mourinho’s dealings with Bastian Schweinsteiger at Manchester United.

The Portuguese manager is yet to involve the 32-year-old in his plans at Old Trafford this season, exiling him from the first team altogether and leaving him to train with the reserves.

The midfielder failed to make the desired impact in Manchester since his move from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, struggling for consistency due to recurring injury complaints under Louis van Gaal.

As a result, it seems that Mourinho is unwilling to offer the World Cup winner a second chance.

Podolski told Bild that he believes this treatment of a player such as Schweinsteiger is disrespectful.

“When you look at the career Bastian has had, I can only say that what is happening there is simply not right for a player of his stature,” he said.

“I do not know what Mourinho has discussed with Bastian. But is clear that it is not okay to drop someone like Basti to the reserves.

“A coach should always keep his door open to all players, and especially to players like Schweini.”

Schweinsteiger previously mentioned that United will be his last club in Europe, however, it is now extremely unlikely that he will play out his contract which expires in June 2018.
