Three days after his incredible cameo appearance against Wellington, Luis Garcia says he is loving the challenges the A-League is offering, as well as the environment in which he works as hit match fitness grows.

The 37-year-old has now played two games off the bench for the Mariners, notching up two assists and a classy back-heeled goal in their 3-1 win in Christchurch.

With scores locked at 0-0, Garcia was introduced by Tony Walmsley on the stroke of half time. His effect on proceedings would be telling as the Mariners secured their first victory away from home in over 600 days.

Garcia had not trained in over a year following his departure from Indian club Atletico Kolkata. That was cause for concern for critics of the Liverpool legend’s move down under, but he says his fitness is continually improving in Gosford, a setting he loves being a part of.

“Every day, I’m trying to get fitter. I’ve been without training for a year, but I feel better every day” Garcia said.

“No, not really, it (the heat) doesn’t help your body.

“But it’s always nice to play when it’s sunny and very nice to train all the time with beautiful weather and a nice beach. I’m really loving it.

“You’ve got a fantastic place right here (referring to Gosford). My family is coming over very soon.

Despite his heroics on the field, Garcia says he still has plenty to work on before he reaches his peak, adding that he is still yet to reach 100% fitness.

“There’s a lot of work to do.

“I’ve been doing the things well but I think I can do it a lot better.

“I feel like my body is still not 100% so hopefully in a few weeks I can feel a lot better and give more to the team.”
