Having reminisced Arsenal’s XI that opened the 2010-11 season against Liverpool, we take a look at the Reds that lined up that day.

Liverpool vs Arsenal, 2011 opening day, where are they now? [PART ONE]

Pepe Reina

One of Liverpool’s finest gloveman, Reina would spend another two seasons on Merseyside before joining Napoli on loan. After a successful season in Naples that saw them win the Coppa Italia, the Spaniard would then join Bayern Munich for a season before rejoining Napoli on a permanent basis. Reina remains the clubs number one shot-stopper.

Glen Johnson

Johnson remains the most expensive right-back in the Premier League era when the Reds forked out £17.5 million to bring him to Merseyside from Portsmouth. The marauding right-back exited Anfield in the summer of 2015, opting to move to Stoke City, where he made 25 league appearances in his first season and still remains apart of Mark Hughes’ squad.

Daniel Agger

Agger remained a fine servant during his nine-year tenure at Liverpool, but he was unfortunately curtailed by injury throughout his time on Merseyside. The Dane departed Anfield in 2014 for his boyhood club Brondby IF and, after two seasons at the Danish club, Agger announced his retirement at the age of 31.

Jamie Carragher

One of Liverpool’s most decorated players, the dogged defender called time on his stellar 17-year career, finishing on 737 appearances and claiming a total of 11 major trophies. Following his retirement, Carragher would join Sky Sports as one of their premier football pundits and regularly features on Sky’s Monday Night Football programme.

Martin Skrtel

The Slovakian remained at the heart of Liverpool’s defence for nine seasons before a loss of form saw him become surplus to requirements at Anfield. Skrtel moved to Turkish giants Fenerbahce for a fee of £5 million in the summer of 2016.

Steven Gerrard

Liverpool’s greatest ever player and one of the greats of his generation, Gerrard brought down the curtain on a glittering Anfield career in 2015. The talismanic figure made 710 appearances for the Reds, scoring 186 goals and winning nine major pieces of silverware. Gerrard now plies his trade for LA Galaxy in America’s MLS competition.

Javier Mascherano

The match against Arsenal would end up being Mascherano’s last for Liverpool before joining Barcelona for €24 million after four seasons for the Merseysiders. The Argentine would reinvent himself into an all action central-defender and would play an important part in a golden era for the club. Mascherano has won 15 trophies in his time at the Spanish giants and still remains an integral member of their squad.

Milan Jovanovic

Jovanovic joined Liverpool on a transfer from Standard Liege in the summer of 2010. The Serb struggled to adapt to the English game and would only make 18 appearances in his only season at the club. He would move to Anderlecht before hanging up the boots once his contract expired in 2013.

Joe Cole

In what was seen as a major coup, Cole joined Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2010. The Englishman struggled to make an impact in his first season and was subsequently loaned to French outfit Lille. Cole returned to Merseyside but found himself on the periphery once again. The attacking midfielder would then join West Ham on a bosman before joining Aston Villa once his Hammers contract expired.

After making 16 appearances for the Villans in two seasons, Cole would join Coventry City on an emergency loan deal before extending the loan deal until season’s end. The 34 year-old’s checkered career now sees him at the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the North American Soccer League.

Dirk Kuyt

The industrious forward became a fan favourite among Liverpool fans due to his tireless work ethic and his ability to score goals in big matches. Kuyt spent six years at Anfield before spending another three seasons at Fenerbahce. The Dutchman then returned to his former club Feynoord, helping them win the  KNVB Cup last term. The 36-year-old is currently a free agent.

David Ngog

The Frenchman led the line for Liverpool that day in what would turn out to be his final year at the club. Ngog would then join Bolton Wanderers for three seasons before spending a short spell at Swansea City. The striker now plies his trade for French club Stade de Reims.
