Merseyside legend Steve McMahon believes the pressures of being Liverpool captain are overwhelming Jordan Henderson.

The midfielder won three league titles and two FA Cups during his 200 plus games at Anfield, but does not see the qualities needed to lead the club to glory in the current Reds skipper.

“Jordan is a good guy and a good player but he’s not a great player and I just think the job is a bit too much for him,” McMahon said in an interview with Foxsports.com.au.

“I just think okay or good is not good enough for Liverpool Football Club and I think you have to earn the respect and the right to be skipper there…

“But having said that, who else would be captain? There aren’t many options in that squad. Is there anyone else you’d choose? Probably not.”

Visiting Australia as a guest of NSW club Dunbar Rovers, McMahon would not rule out a return to coaching in the A-league amid Scott Miller’s sacking from the Newcastle Jets – having spent an infamous season at the helm of Perth Glory in 2005-06.

“Absolutely. I’ve got a big one left in me that’s for sure. I believe in myself and yes I’ve got a lot to offer. I run academies and I’m still involved in coaching. There’s a stint in me yet,” McMahon said.
