After the announcement of a Liverpool Legends exhibition game ‘Down Under’ in January 2016, club legend and member of the touring party, Dietmar Hamann spoke exclusively to the Daily Football Show

In his subtle ‘scouse’ accent, Hamann said he was looking forward to returning to Australia again after he was here during Liverpool’s pre-season tour earlier this year.

“It’s great to come back in January. We’re bringing some of the all time greats with us and everyone is looking forward to it.” he said.

“I have to say, I was aware the club has a huge following all over the world, but I was very surprised and flattered by the number of Liverpool fans in Australia.”

“The most important thing will be to see as many fans as we can.”

Headlined by club legends Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Ian Rush, Hamann is part of a squad that will take on the likes of Mark Bosnich, Jason Culina and Brett Emerton in an Australia Legends XI.

Remembered by his heroics off the bench in that famous 2005 Champions League Final against AC Milan, Hamann says he can’t believe it has been 10 years since that incredible night in Instanbul.

“Time has flown by you’ve got to say,” he said.

“The memories are the thing that sticks the longest and it is the reason why you play the game.”

When asked whether it was his injection after being substituted on at half-time that changed the game, Hamann cheekily replied, “Of course it was!”

“The game did change. Sometimes it football and in sport things happen that you can’t explain.”

“It was a collective effort and the reason why we won so many trophies.”

The 42-year-old also spoke highly of former teammate and Socceroo icon Harry Kewell, who was dogged by injuries at Anfield following a glittering start to his Premier League career with Leeds United.

“He was one of the best players in the league [At Leeds]. I thought when he did sign the club for five million quid that it was the best buy in a long time for us,” he said.

“At the same time, we shouldn’t forget that he did have an impact. I remember the game against Olympiakos [2005 Champions League] where we needed three goals in the second half where he [Kewell] set a couple of goals up.”

“Unfortunately we didn’t get to see the best of Harry.”

Hamann concluded by speaking on the current crop of Liverpool players who have enjoyed a mini-rival under Jurgen Klopp, saying top four this season is “absolutely a realistic goal.”
