Rayo Vallecano travelled to El Madrigal to take on Villarreal and will rue not capitalising on their chances as they left with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Yellow Submarine.

The visitors took the lead thanks to a wonderful strike from midfielder Jozabed who made the most of some poor Villarreal defending from a throw in to volley the ball past Alphonse Areola in the 41st minute.

Cedric Bakambu restored parity for the home side and would then see his team into the lead and ultimately give his team the victory.

The Congolese forward received a delicate ball from Roberto Soldado and whilst the Rayo defence cried for an offside call Bakambu put the ball in from eight yards out.

His second was the product of smart wing play from Denis Suarez whose pinpoint cross left Bakambu with a tap in to hand the home side three points.

The return of fit forwards proves the difference

Villarreal started their last league game with no fit forwards, leaving Marcelino to play Samuel Garcia alone up front. The set up didn’t work for El Submarino Amarillo as Getafe would win that match 2-0.

This time out the home side had the luxury of fielding two forwards for the entire 90 minutes and it made a world of difference.

Clearly Marcelino’s tactics revolve around the 4-4-2 and any change from it seems to have adverse effects on his team, but with Bakambu and Soldado back leading the line his men flourished.

In the first half Denis Suarez looked revitalised as a player as his two forwards opened space for him to run and play into with their smart movement off the ball. Soldado especially did his best work without the ball at his feet as the Rayo defenders focused on the former Spanish International leaving time and space for those on the flanks.

Suarez would provide the assist for his side’s second goal and all in all have his best game in a yellow shirt thanks to the availability of his forward compatriots.
